New features and plans for the future

Dear Speedanki users,

My name is Péter Kasza and I’m jointly working on developing the site with Vili. As the first post to the blog states, there have been a few modifications to the site, mainly fixing bugs and improving security.

I am working in my free time on improving the site, so sometimes new features may take a while. I’ll try to implement the easy-to-do ones first so that you don’t have to wait months for something new.

The first visible change I have made concerns the list view. I have added buttons for toggling the kanji and hiragana for each entry. This way you can quickly skim through a large number of cards and ‘flip’ only the ones you didn’t recognize. I personally use it for practicing writing kanji.

Current plans for the site include:

  • randomization of the cards
  • keyboard navigation
  • personal comments for each card
  • editable example text
  • displaying stroke order
  • kanji to hiragana transcription based on the learned cards

Please feel free to contact us with your ideas on improving the site.

Thank you all for using speedanki!

very good ideas and keep up the good work, there is also something that i find really helpful, its creates your own filters not just mastered review , if possible might be a good idea, dont know

    Hey guys,

Good to hear you lot are back!

It looks like you are missing examples for approximately the last 800 of the ikkyuu kanji. Would it be helpful for us to submit example sentences? Or is it just some kind of bug?

Sumiko: Yes they’re missing. I am thinking about implementing user submitted examples, but parts of the site is very badly written and it is hard to make modifications.

Josh: The randomization feature is almost done, but there is a bug somewhere and I can’t get it to work properly. (Note that I’m not just picking a random card. I’ve implemented this feature using random permutations, so the cards remain in order after being shuffled.)

    Hey Vili,

It’s Joe here, the owner of http://kanjikuma.com

Thanks for checking out my site, I really love your site too, it really helped me prepare for JLPT 2. And of course you can see kanjikuma is totally influenced by speedanki!! Just out of curiosity can you let us know why were the original forum and blog taken down?

Good to know you guys are back in town though!

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for your message. The old forum was not maintained for over a year and was in pretty bad shape in terms of spam, so I thought it easier to start over. As for the old blog, are you referring to http://www.njuku.com/ ? It’s still online, it’s just not been updated since 2006 so I removed the link.

    Cheers!

Haha, if I had only seen this post before my comment on the most recent blog. I suggested a randomization… i.e. a shuffling option. Haha

    Thanks Vili,

That is indeed the blog I was thinking of, sorry I should have bookmarked the address. I really really liked the blog, I used to print one out everyday! It’s a shame that no one is updating that blog anymore.
