500+ new example sentences for level 1 words

One of Speedanki’s main advantages over some other Japanese flash card sites is the inclusion of a carefully crafted example sentence for each word. The examples were made for Speedanki by native speakers and represent correct, natural language use, in contrast to fragments taken from a manga or a movie. You can thus be sure that time invested into Speedanki is well spent.

Every word in Speedanki belonging to JLPT levels 4, 3 and 2 comes with an example sentence. But for a long time, we were missing example sentences from most of the level 1 cards (the most advanced set of words). I received quite a lot of feedback from you regarding this, and decided to get it dealt with. In December, we introduced 50 new example sentences. And today, thanks to the efforts of Speedanki user KenH’s mum, we are introducing no less than 538 new example sentences! As a result, most of the level 1 words now come with an example that demonstrates correct use and helps with memorisation. I’m sure we’ll be able to fill in the few remaining gaps before long as well.

So whatever the level of your Japanese, enjoy studying vocabulary and kanji with Speedanki. And please let your level 1 friends know about this improvement as well.

Thanks one more time to KenH and his mum. As always, please feel free to send feedback via the comments below or through email to team@speedanki.com. Btw this was my first Speedanki blog post from Japan :)

Hello Vili, fantastic! Have only had a quick look, but clearly lots more examples than there were before. Great work.

I passed L1 in December, and pass on my sincere thanks to Speedanki – it was very close and I really do think Speedanki was a big factor in pushing me over the line… I won’t be here as much as I was from now on, but will still drop by when I can to keep my hand in!

Cheers and good luck to everyone taking up the challenge!

Gareth, thanks for your message and congrats on passing level 1! That is a huge achievement. Glad to hear you found Speedanki useful, do keep in touch!

Hi, have been studying Japanese for a while and am really impressed with this site. Just one query:

I have tried a few times to cut, paste and enter various words I don’t understand from example sentences into the ‘jump to’ box at the top right. I assumed this would take me to that word itself somewhere on the list, but each time it just says ‘card not found’.

Just wanted to know if I’m doing it wrong, or if maybe it just hasn’t been programmed yet? Thanks a lot, Griffin

Hello, I love SpeedAnki, but have a question/request, can you make it into a mobile-friendly service? Best would be an iPhone app! But at least mobile friendly web page of your current service?

    Thanks for considering this,
    Scott

Hello, SpeedAnki has been really helpful. Are you going to change the levels to correspond to the new JLPT format (ie New Level 5=old level 4, level4=old level3 level 3 is new, etc)? Thanks for the help!

I can’t find a e-mail so I’ll put my complaint here. I stopped using speedanki months ago because my deck of ‘read’ level two cards can’t get past two, even though there are 37 cards in the deck, when I click ‘next’ from the second one, it returns to the first card. Can you tell me why this keeps happening?

Do you have cards for the new leve 3?

    Dear All!

I’m currently doing grammar, hitting this monster book btw! Just tonnes of grammar, problem is I bought it in TAIWAN, and so there aint any englihs, just chinese and japanese, does anyone know a site where I can search for the grammar point I want to check?

I have a teacher here, but it wastes time just going through the whole book with him.

    thanks,

    Jamie, try this:

    http://jlpt.mobi/jlpt/jsp/download_index.jsp

It’s an excellent resource that includes lots of old exam papers, and also right down the bottom of this page, under 【試験範囲】in the right-hand column, grammar, there is a handy list of all the grammar points you need to know for each level. It’s Japanese only, but has good examples so is pretty easy to understand. It’s a very quick way of getting a handle on what you need to know for the test.

You have to sign up an account, but I had no issues in doing so. You get points on signing up, so can download a certain amount.. but you will run out unless you post in the forum.. so be careful how much you download!

    Good luck!

Hi All, thanks for the comments again! Some responses below and more in an upcoming blog post.

Griffin: The jump box allows you to jump to a specific card by entering the number of that card. It’s probably not very intuitive now that cards can be displayed in a random order, if it ever was.

Scott: A mobile version is definitely in the works!

Stephen: Glad you are enjoying Speedanki. Yes, we have to update the level names, see next blog post.

louis: Hmm, sounds like a possible cookie problem. Could you please make sure that cookies are enabled for Speedanki.com. Also please delete any existing cookies for the site. Our email address team@speedanki.com is written on the front page, but it’s true that it’s not very noticeable.

JLPT: Not yet at least — see next blog post.

Jamie: http://www.jgram.org/ has a lot of grammar info organised into JLPT levels.

Gareth: thanks for helping Jamie and everyone out with the tip :)

    Hi there.

    Thanks for creating speedanki.com

Is there a way that I can clear all of the stats? I’d like to be able to reset my lesson.

Also, have you ever heard of a program called “Spectra Kanji” by Paradigm reserach corporation?

  12. Vili’s avatar

    Hi Joe,

You’ll have to create a new account to start from afresh, sorry.

As for Spectra Kanji, I believe dictionary software like JEdict will give you similar functionality today (cross-linking kanjis and radicals).
